The Crown Office intends to lodge an appeal against the “unduly lenient” sentence given to a man convicted of assault at Lerwick Sheriff Court.

Liam Cromwell, 22, was sentenced to 12 months behind bars on 18th September, having been found guilty of a religiously aggravated assault to severe injury, danger of life and permanent impairment.

The Crown has today announced its decision to lodge an appeal against sentence, on the grounds that it may be considered unduly lenient.

In a statement the Crown Office said: “Following full and careful consideration of all of the facts and circumstances in this case, Crown counsel instructed that an appeal against sentence should be lodged.

“As proceedings are active it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
